20 â NOT EVERYONE WANTS A SAVIOUR
Nox headed upstairs to his room, ignoring the moans and screams of ecstasy from the closed doors he passed. Then he heard a different kind of scream, the shrill sound of pain. He halted, the echoes of his footfalls drowned out by the cries of a woman, and the sound of striking flesh.
ââMove on,â Sally told him.
âWhen the woman screamed again, he could no longer ignore it. He burst through the door, charging in. Only his promise to Ruby made him keep his guns sheathed, and it was a battle of wills to fight the reflex of the draw. He hauled a large man off the screaming woman, whose face was bruised and bloodied, and soaked with tears. The man was taken aback, surprised that anyone would dare interfere in this sacred place of debauchery. He was even more surprised that he was faced with someone who would fight back.
âIt took a single well-aimed blow to the chin to fell the man and leave him slumped on the floor. He'd have to finish his fantasies in his dreams.
âNox extended a hand to the woman.
ââWhat've you done?â she asked, recoiling from him. âWhy did you do that?â
âNox hesitated. âI ⦠was trying to save you.â
âHer bloodshot eyes widened. âSave me? Not everyone wants a saviour!â She got up, clutching the bedsheets around her naked body. âOh God. Now he'll never pay!â
ââBut I thoughtââ
ââYou thought wrong! You've only gone and made a mess of things. Oh God. Ruby's gonna kill me.â She paced around the room, letting the bedsheets inadvertently mop up some of the man's blood.
ââI'm sorry,â the Coilhunter said. âI was just trying to help.â
ââWell, don't!â
ââI'll fix it with Ruby.â
ââCan you fix it with him?â she roared, pointing to the patron on the floor. âJust ⦠just go!â She pushed Nox back out into the corridor and slammed the door, where he could still hear her sobs.
ââI told you,â Sally said. Amber said nothing.
âNox grumbled.
ââSome of them like the pain,â Sally added, gently slapping herself on the rear. âAll of them like the money.â She looked at Amber, who looked away.
ââThere are other ways to earn that,â Nox said.
ââWhat, like bounty huntin'?â Sally cocked her head. âWell, good night then.â
âAmber led her further upstairs, bringing her to a room on one end of the corridor. Nox went to his room on the other side. It had a comfortable bed, which he wasn't used to, but there was something about being in a place like this, where everyone had someoneâeven if they were boughtâthat made him feel incredibly lonely.
